Our Employees Excel In AND Out of the Office!

Christian Herrera, 18, has worked for Western Equipment since May of 2010, as a part-time employee in the parts warehouse at our Clinton store. Christian is an honors and AP student at Clinton High School and will graduate in May as a co-Valedictorian, with a 4.0 grade point average. He is the son of Ricardo Herrera. He has got one younger brother, Cameron, and two younger sisters, Cara and Cassidy, all from Clinton.

While excelling in the classroom and carrying out his “work duties” at Western Equipment, he has also been involved in several extra-curricular activities. He is a member of the CHS Varsity Boys Basketball team, co-Captain of the CHS Academic Team, Vice President of CHS Student Council, Vice President of CHS Key Club, and President of CHS SWAT Club (Students Working Against Tobacco).

He spends much of his time with his volunteer efforts. He gives his time as an algebra tutor, and he has been an assistant boys’ coach with the Great Plains Soccer Association, a junior volunteer at Clinton Regional Hospital, and a junior volunteer at the Clinton Public Library.

Christian plans to attend college in the fall at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina. He will be majoring in Mathematics.

Although he still has another couple of weeks left as a senior at Clinton High, he’s already busy racking up a number of impressive awards and scholarships. He was selected as November’s CHS Red Tornado Senior Boy of the Month, is a Blunck’s Leader of Tomorrow, and as stated earlier, will be one of six Valedictorians at CHS this year, with a perfect GPA. Christian has been honored as an Oklahoma Academic Scholar for 2012, which requires that honorees achieve scores in the 99.5 percentile on the ACT or SAT.

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has also recognized Christian as a 2012 Academic All-State Honoree. This prestigious award places Christian among the top 100 public high school seniors in the state. In order to receive nomination, students must achieve an ACT composite score of 30 or above, an SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1340 or above, or be selected as a semi-finalist for a National Merit Scholarship.

Christian has also been selected as a 2012 Gates Millenium Scholar. The program is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates, and each year, the applicant pool is whittled down from 25,000 to just 1,000 nationwide. These 1,000 talented students are chosen to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. That scholarship money will last for as long as Christian chooses to be in school, whether he’s pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or a Doctorate degree, and any post-doctoral degree work. This scholarship will provide Christian with an all-expenses-paid college experience.

Western Equipment couldn’t be more proud of Christian, and all of his accomplishments. He’s a hard worker, he’s dedicated, and at a young 18, he’s already setting the bar high for setting goals, having perseverance, and achieving success. We know that he will go on to do wonderful things. We only wish there was a Western Equipment location in Durham, so that we could keep him in the family!
